Weaning off the boob

Hi, i'm new here. I'm actually a second time mum. I have a 2 yr old and an 8 mth old. I had no dramas with my eldest daughter when it came to wean from boob to bottle at around 6 mths. However, my youngest daughter will not take a bottle, not even with expressed breast milk in it. I know breast feeding is beneficial and all but she's taking solids now and i'm just soooooo exhausted. I've been either pregnant or breastfeeding since 2003!!! I need to call it quits but don't know how to get her to take formula. I'm trying to teach her how to drink from a sipper cup with water but from experience, this will take a few good months and i just don't want to wait that long. Is there anyone out there that might have a solution or has gone through this themselves?|:-|

HI I know exactly how

HI I know exactly how you feel, I too have been pregnant and breastfeeding from dec 02 till dec 05. My youngest is now just over 2, she was boob fed till 18mths plus, I then decided she had to get off!! I tried a cup, not interested, we ended up on a bottle, one in the night one in the morning, and now 6 mths later I want to wean her off the dreaded bottle!! My oldest never had a bottle, even though I tried!! She went straight to a cup at 9mths, and was part boob fed till 13mths. I think my milked changed flavour when I was pregnant so this helped the older one wean herself.

We are trying not to give her a bottle at night unless she asks for, and the same in the morning. She seems to not mind dropping the morning bottle, so long as she has breaky asap, but the evenings are proving hard.;-)
My kids were alittle older when weaned, so I did't worry so much about missed feeds etc, but maybe you could try someone else feeding her the bottle, or perhaps miximg the formula in with cereal so she can get the taste of it. Or persist alittle longer with the boob till shes a bit older and can feed herself easier. Good luck:-)

hi,
i went through the same

hi,
i went through the same thing with my 9 month old son, i found when i started him on solids it was easier, also i found that the brand of bottle was a problem, i use to try him with advent bottles and he hated it but then i tried NUK and now i have no problem. i dont know if that helps, but i understand its fusterating, it was driving me crazy. Good luck:-)

Thanks both of you for

Thanks both of you for your advice. I've actually tried everything and now i'm thinking i may have to leave her with someone for the day and leave. But the problem is who? I guess people shy away (friends and relos) when you even suggest such an extreme favour. I guess my best bet is to just wait it out, even though i'm exhausted. One thing's for sure, my next children will be lucky to get 3 mths on the boob. |:-|

Karen Hi I am having the

Karen
Hi
I am having the same problem my son is now 11months and still wont take milk from bottle or cup plus he isnt sleeping well. I have tried to ween him off the boob but he wont have a bar of it my other three children were easy. It gets hard I am so exhausted I am praying for the day he doesnt want boob

Hi
I had someone suggest

Hi
I had someone suggest to me that the taste of formula on sterilised water is yuk (she tasted it when her child rejected it, braver then I) amd that making it on tap water now that the need to sterilise is less makes a difference. I tried it with my 8month old and it seems to have worked. There was a transition the first day she only took 50mls and the second 75 etc. After about a week she was taking 240mls. Though I have only swapped for a few feeds when I am out or working etc. Might be worth a try.

hi i'm currently in the same

hi i'm currently in the same boat at you my daughter is almost 14 months and since 11 months i was trying to ween her off the breast but we tried different bottles cups formulas norm milks breast in bottle etc but she still wont take them so on friday i just went cold turkey(pretty much) on her as she wouldn't have any thing and i figured she would just take it after a day or so but isn't so now it's been 3 days and she puts herself to sleep the bottle is still there if she wants it also i found she likes my sons big kid drink bottle so she drank water from that ! but i kinda feel bad as shes only drinking milk in her b/fast so i've been giving her a breast feed about the 3rd time she wakes up at night (usually between 2 &4 am)she still cries for a while each time she wakes up and i'm exausted especialy since i'm pretty much a single mum with 3 under 3 but hopefully it'll get easier ! good luck guys let me know how you all go !

oh yes i fully

oh yes i fully understand, feel like ive been breast feeding and pregnant for past 5 years, but i have no solutions.my son 4 still insists on that night bottle,my 2 year old still on bottle, now my 1 year old breast fed im scared to give her a bottle because i dont want her to go through same ordeals. my 4 year old and 2 year olds are very fussy eaters and depend too much on milk.my 2 year year old was diagnosed anaemic which ended in a blood transfusion, thus due to too much milk and not enough iron(good foods) apparently milk makes it harder for iron to absorb into the body..so my only suggestion would be persist with breast feeding until a cup is used enough(with water)to substitute milk drink and push more solids.im trying that still with the breast..keep you posted how i go.any ideas let me know.
